Frequently asked questions – Motorhome Self-Leveling Systems
How quickly will a new Motorhome Levelling System level my vehicle?
Customers often tell me that speed is a key factor when choosing a self-leveling system.
Hydraulic leveling systems, in general, tend to be faster than electric alternatives, providing a more stable and secure base in less time.
Generally, hydraulic leveling systems will level your motorhome or campervan within a couple of minutes.
How much do Motorhome Self-Leveling Systems cost?
Great question, but is depends. There is generally a published price by the system manufacturer. But your vehicle will be different to the motorhome or campervan on the pitch next door. One of the key influencers on price is changes and adjustments under a vehicle. Your vehicle may have a water tank that needs to be moved 10cm to enable a bracket to fit onto your chassis.
At Bristol Caravans we offer a free assessment so both owner and installer are on the same page.
Can I Manually Level My Motorhome if Needed?
While automatic leveling is a game-changer, having manual control options can be beneficial in certain situations. All of the brands that we install offer manual levelling.
Having the flexibility to switch between automatic and manual control ensures that you can adapt to different situations with ease.
Do Self-Levelling Systems have a remote?
One element that you might want to consider is having the ability to operate the system via a remote, you can often make better decisions if you step back from the vehicle for a wider view whilst levelling. There are two ways to operate a system “remotely”
– Mobile phone app
– Physical remote control unit
Most systems come with some sort of remote. Which do you prefer? App on your mobile or a dedicated remote unit?
What Is the Maximum Angle My System Can Handle?
Another great question, and to be honest, it’s difficult to give a definitive answer. The maximum incline a system can handle varies by levelling system brand and design, this is because each levelling system brand has different brackets and hydraulic rams. Which means one brand on one make/model of vehicle will lift slightly higher than another brand. In my experience none of the brands lift higher in all situations.
Hydraulic leveling systems will lift your motorhome or campervan higher than an electric system. The higher the lift, the greater the possible incline. If the levelling system fitted to your vehicle will only level within the range of the suspension, you will be limited on achieving level.
All levelling systems are engineered to accommodate standard campsite inclines, so if you plan to stay on purpose built campsites, electric or hydraulic levelling will deliver.
But if you plan to go off grid, consider a hydraulic system, the lift is greater. Before purchase, ask the installer to confirm the amount of lift available from the system they sell.
Most premium self-leveling systems can adjust to moderate slopes, providing a stable and secure base regardless of the ground conditions. But don’t expect a levelling system to get you level on Mount Everest!
Will my new motorhome self-leveling system have safety features to prevent accidental system activation while driving?
Safety is paramount when using self-leveling systems, leading brands incorporate differing key features to prevent accidental activation:
- Built-in safety protocols that prevent the system from being activated while in motion.
- Audible warning alarm if the handbrake is let “off” whilst the legs are down.
- Auto retract if the handbrake to let “off” whilst the legs are down.
With these safety measures in place, you can travel with confidence, knowing that your leveling system will only engage when intended.
Will my new motorhome self-leveling system have security features?
Yes, some brands offer an additional layer of security with a keypad that requires a unique access code, to switch the self-levelling “on”, thus preventing unauthorised use and acting as a theft deterrent.
Imagine a row of five motorhomes and campervans, if one is lifted so the front wheels are off the ground, and the only way to get the vehicle down is to switch the levelling system on via a keypad with a unique code, suddenly the lifted vehicle is less of a target compared to the other units.
What is the right self-leveling system for my motorhome?
Investing in a high-quality self-leveling system can significantly improve your motorhome or campervan experience. It can also positively affect your vehicle’s residual / resale value.
Whether you prioritise speed, manual adjustability, incline capability, safety or security features, brands like E&P, AL-KO, MA-VE, and Amplo provide top-tier solutions tailored to your needs.
Whilst it is possible to buy a levelling system on eBay, I would strongly recommend visiting the brands website, then identifying an approved installer. Contact a couple of installers, discuss your needs, and listen to their replies.
Not all systems are the same, not all installers are the same. This is a high value investment, find an installer who will match the right system to your specific needs. Price is always important, don’t “save” a few hundred pounds, and end up with the wrong system for you, it’s a high cost to rectify.
For the best results, always consult your system’s user manual and adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
With the right self-leveling system, you can enjoy hassle-free setup, enhanced comfort, and a stable foundation no matter where the road takes you.
