E&P Hydraulics Explained

The total cost of an E&P system depends on the size and type of motorhome, the number of hydraulic jacks required, and whether the system is being installed from new or retrofitted. Larger A-class motorhomes generally sit at the higher end of the price range, while smaller coachbuilts may be slightly less expensive.

Installation is a significant part of the cost, as it involves fitting hydraulic rams, routing pipework, and integrating the control system. Prices can also vary depending on the installer and any additional features, such as upgraded control panels or app connectivity, but most UK owners find the investment worthwhile for the convenience and stability it provides.

E&P systems are designed to fit a wide range of motorhomes, including popular base vehicles such as the Fiat Ducato, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and similar platforms. However, compatibility depends on factors like chassis layout, available mounting points, and overall vehicle weight.

In some cases, minor modifications may be required to ensure proper installation and safe operation. A professional installer will assess your specific motorhome to confirm compatibility and recommend the most suitable configuration, ensuring the system works effectively without compromising structural integrity.

One of the main advantages of an E&P levelling system is its simplicity. Most models feature a fully automatic mode that levels the motorhome in just a few minutes using a control panel or remote, eliminating the need for ramps or manual adjustments.

For added flexibility, manual controls are also included, allowing users to fine-tune the levelling if needed. Some systems even offer smartphone app control, making operation even more convenient, especially when setting up on uneven pitches.

Fitting an E&P levelling system is a specialised job that typically takes between one and two days, depending on the motorhome and complexity of the installation. The process involves securely mounting hydraulic jacks, installing the pump and control unit, and ensuring everything is correctly calibrated.

Because of the technical nature of the system, installation should always be done by trained and approved professionals. This ensures the system operates safely and reliably, and it also helps maintain warranty coverage and long-term performance.

E&P levelling systems are known for their durability and are built to withstand regular use in a variety of weather conditions. The hydraulic components are robust, and failures are relatively rare when the system is properly installed and used as intended.

Maintenance is usually limited to periodic checks, such as inspecting hydraulic lines and keeping moving parts clean. Many owners report years of trouble-free operation, though occasional servicing by a professional can help ensure the system continues to perform at its best over time.

Weight is an important consideration for motorhome owners, as adding an E&P levelling system will reduce the available payload. Most systems add between 50 and 70 kilograms, depending on the configuration and number of jacks installed.

While this may not be significant for larger motorhomes, it can be more noticeable on vehicles with limited payload capacity. Before installation, it’s a good idea to check your current weight margins and, if necessary, consider a weight upgrade to ensure you remain within legal limits.

“We arrived at Llanfyllin, and it was raining so hard it was difficult to find our plot. Once parked up, it took just 90 seconds as we let our automatic levelling system get us level. Thank you, Bristol Caravans, for fitting our amazing levelling system.”
