AL-KO Levelling Explained

AL-KO and E&P levelling systems use hydraulic jacks mounted to the chassis that extend to lift and stabilise the motorhome. Built-in sensors detect how uneven the vehicle is and adjust each leg accordingly to bring it level.

In most cases, the entire process is fully automatic and takes just a couple of minutes, though you can also manually control the legs if needed. This removes the need for ramps and guesswork when pitching up.

These systems are designed to work on a wide range of surfaces including grass, gravel, and uneven pitches, making them far more versatile than manual levelling methods. The hydraulic legs provide strong, stable contact even on softer ground.

However, every system has its limits, and extremely steep slopes may exceed the safe operating range. In those cases, you may need to reposition the vehicle or use ramps to reduce the angle before levelling.

AL-KO-compatible levelling systems are engineered to mount onto reinforced chassis points, ensuring the load is distributed safely during lifting. The system raises the vehicle in a controlled way using multiple jacks to minimise stress and twisting.

It’s normal in some situations for wheels to come slightly off the ground, and this is accounted for in the design. As long as the system is installed and used correctly, it will not harm the structural integrity of your motorhome.

The total cost depends on factors like the size and weight of your motorhome, the chassis type, and the specific system you choose. Smaller vans tend to be at the lower end, while larger A-class motorhomes are typically at the higher end.

While the upfront investment is significant, many owners see it as a long-term upgrade that improves comfort, convenience, and resale value. It’s often compared to adding air conditioning or solar in terms of lifestyle improvement.

Most levelling systems are designed as bolt-on installations that attach to existing chassis mounting points, which helps keep fitting time relatively short. In typical cases, the job is completed within two days.

It’s important that installation is done by trained and approved technicians to ensure safety, proper calibration, and warranty protection. Choosing an experienced installer also reduces the risk of future issues.

With a levelling system, you can set up your motorhome in minutes without leaving your seat or handling ramps. It also provides a much more stable living experience, eliminating rocking and improving comfort inside the vehicle.

While ramps are cheaper, they require more effort and trial-and-error, especially on uneven pitches. For many owners—particularly frequent travellers—the time saved and ease of use make the system well worth the investment.

“We arrived at Llanfyllin, and it was raining so hard it was difficult to find our plot. Once parked up, it took just 90 seconds as we let our automatic levelling system get us level. Thank you, Bristol Caravans, for fitting our amazing levelling system.”
