Does rear-air suspension increase my motorhome’s payload?
This is one of the most important questions to answer.
Rear air suspension does not automatically increase your motorhome’s legal payload or axle weight limits.
What it can do is provide additional support to the rear suspension when your motorhome is carrying a heavier load.
Your motorhome still has a maximum authorised mass (MAM), as well as maximum front and rear axle weights. These limits must not be exceeded, regardless of whether the vehicle has standard suspension, uprated springs or air suspension.
So, if you’re considering adding a scooter, several e-bikes or a substantial rear-mounted carrier, the first step is understanding the vehicle’s existing weights and available payload.
Why does a rear-mounted bike rack have such an effect?
It isn’t just the weight of the equipment that matters.
A load positioned behind the rear axle creates leverage on the rear of the motorhome. The further the load is from the axle, the greater the effect can be.
That’s why a relatively modest amount of weight mounted at the very back of a motorhome can have a noticeable effect on the suspension.

- A softer or less controlled ride

How can rear-air suspension help?
A rear air suspension system provides additional support to the vehicle’s existing suspension.
The system can be adjusted to suit the load being carried, helping the motorhome maintain a more appropriate ride height when additional weight is positioned at the rear. This can be particularly useful with heavier bike racks and e-bikes, where the combined weight of the rack and bikes can be considerably more than a conventional bicycle setup.
However, the right setup depends on the individual motorhome, its existing suspension, the weight being carried and how that weight is positioned.
And air suspension isn’t a replacement for choosing the correct towbar or carrier. The towbar, carrier, vehicle and suspension all need to be suitable for the intended application.
