If you own a motorhome, you’ll already know it’s not quite like any other vehicle. It’s your transport and your home- all rolled into one. That’s why it needs two types of servicing to stay in top condition: an engine service and a habitation service.
Many owners are unsure what each service covers so let’s break it down and explain why both are essential for keeping your motorhome safe, reliable and comfortable.
What Is a Habitation Service?
A habitation service focuses on the living area of your motorhome- the “home” part. It’s designed to make sure everything inside is working safely and efficiently, giving you peace of mind when you’re on the road.
For more about habitation safety standards, see the NCC (National Caravan Council):

During a habitation service, we check:
- Gas systems: for leaks, pressure and safe operation of your cooker, fridge, and heater.
- Water systems: including the toilet, shower and water tanks for leaks or blockages.
- Electrical systems: 12V and 230V circuits, sockets and appliances.
- Ventilation & heating: to make sure airflow and temperature controls are working correctly.
- Windows, doors and seals: to ensure everything closes securely and stays watertight.
- Damp check: a full moisture test across the habitation area to detect early signs of water ingress.
Why it matters:
A habitation service keeps your motorhome comfortable and safe to live in, helps prevent damp and damage and protects your warranty and resale value.
At Bristol Caravans, a full habitation service also includes a detailed damp report and safety certificate so you know exactly what condition your motorhome is in.
What Is an Engine (Chassis) Service?
An engine service- often called a chassis service- focuses on the driving and mechanical parts of your motorhome. Think of it as the same type of service your car gets, but tailored to a motorhome’s size and components, following guidance from the DVSA.
During an engine/chassis service, we check:
- Engine oil and filters: replaced or topped up as needed.
- Brakes, suspension, and steering: for wear, leaks, or safety issues.
- Drive belts and gearbox: checked for damage or signs of strain.
- Battery and charging system: tested to make sure everything runs reliably.
- Tyres and wheel bearings: for correct pressure, tread depth, and overall condition.
- Lights, wipers, and fluid levels: to ensure road safety.
Why it matters:
Regular engine servicing ensures your vehicle runs efficiently, extends its lifespan and reduces the risk of breakdowns- especially before long trips.
So… Do You Need Both?
Yes and here’s why.
Your motorhome is a combination of a home and a vehicle, which means it needs care for both halves to stay in good condition. Skipping either service can lead to costly issues:
- Ignoring the habitation side can result in damp, leaks or unsafe gas appliances.
- Neglecting the engine service can cause mechanical failures or safety risks on the road.
That’s why at Bristol Caravans, we recommend:
- Engine/Chassis Service – every 12 months or 10,000 miles.
- Habitation Service – every 12 months, ideally before or after your main travel season.
