When Should You Replace Your Motorhome Tyres? It’s Not Just About Tread

When it comes to motorhome safety, tyers are often overlooked especially if the tread still looks good. Unlike cars, motorhome tyers can deteriorate over time even if the vehicle isn’t driven very often. Understanding when tyers really need replacing is essential for safety, performance and peace of mind on the road.

The truth is, tyre age and condition matter just as much as tread depth.

Why Motorhome Tyres Wear Differently

Motorhomes are heavier than cars and often spend long periods parked up. This extra weight, combined with inactivity, can place stress on tyres even when the vehicle isn’t moving. Exposure to sunlight, temperature changes and moisture can cause the rubber to harden and crack over time, reducing grip and increasing the risk of failure.

Because of this, tyres can look perfectly fine at a glance while actually being unsafe to use.

Tyre Age: The Most Commonly Missed Factor

Most tyre manufacturers and motorhome experts recommend replacing tyres at around 5–7 years old, regardless of tread depth. As tyres age, the rubber compounds degrade, making them less flexible and more prone to cracking or sudden failure.

You can check a tyre’s age by looking at the DOT code on the sidewall. The final four digits show the week and year the tyre was made. For example, “2420” means the tyre was manufactured in the 24th week of 2020.

Signs Your Motorhome Tyres Need Replacing

In addition to age, there are several warning signs that indicate it’s time for new tyres:

  • Cracks or splits in the sidewalls
  • Bulges or uneven wear
  • Persistent loss of pressure
  • Vibrations or poor handling while driving
  • Visible damage from kerbs or road debris

If you notice any of these, the tyres should be inspected as soon as possible.

The Risks of Driving on Old Tyres

Driving on worn or aged tyres increases the risk of blowouts, reduced braking performance and loss of control, especially on wet roads or at motorway speeds. Tyre failure on a motorhome can be particularly dangerous due to the vehicle’s size and weight.

Old tyres may also invalidate insurance cover if an accident occurs and the tyres are found to be unroadworthy.

Storage, Tyre Pressure and Load Ratings

Correct tyre pressure is critical on motorhomes, as under- or over-inflation accelerates wear and affects handling. Tyres must also have the correct load rating to safely support the vehicle.

Long-term storage can cause flat spots and sidewall stress, so checking pressures regularly, even when the motorhome isn’t in use- is essential.

Professional Tyre Checks Make a Difference

A professional tyre check can identify issues that aren’t always obvious. This includes assessing age, condition, load rating and pressure suitability for your specific motorhome.

At Bristol Caravans, we help motorhome owners understand the true condition of their tyres, ensuring they’re safe and suitable before heading off on their next journey during our engine chassis services.

Safety First, Every Trip

Motorhome tyres play a vital role in keeping you safe on the road. Replacing them at the right time – not just when the tread runs low – helps protect your vehicle, your passengers and your travel plans.

If you’re unsure about the age or condition of your tyres, having them checked before your next trip is a simple step that can prevent serious problems and give you confidence behind the wheel.
