Motor Movers Explained

Motor movers are electric drive units fitted to the caravan’s chassis. When engaged, rollers press against the caravan’s wheels and rotate them, allowing you to manoeuvre the van precisely via a handheld remote. You can drive forwards, backwards, and even spin the caravan 360° on the spot.

This is ideal for tight spaces like narrow driveways, storage compounds, or awkward pitches. It removes the hassle (and risk) of reversing into position, especially when you’re on your own or have limited visibility around the vehicle.

Single and twin-axle caravans can both be fitted with motor movers, but it’s important to match the right mover to your caravan’s size and weight. Heavier vans may require a twin-motor or all-wheel-drive mover for sufficient traction and torque.

Your caravan’s chassis type (e.g. AL-KO or BPW), the available ground clearance, and obstacle-free mounting space are all key factors a technician will check before installation. Most reputable dealers will assess compatibility before recommending a system.

Although compact, a motor mover does add weight, usually between 25 and 35 kilograms depending on the model. This weight is added to your caravan’s MIRO (Mass in Running Order), so it reduces the amount of payload available for things like luggage, water, and accessories.

If you’re close to your weight limit already, it’s something to seriously consider. It’s also good practice to have your caravan weighed after installation to ensure you’re within legal towing limits.

Motor movers draw a significant amount of current, especially when moving uphill, over gravel, or onto levelling ramps. A quality leisure battery with enough amp-hour capacity is essential to ensure the mover operates reliably and doesn’t cut out under load.

Generally, a minimum 85Ah battery is recommended for small caravans, while larger or twin-axle setups may require 110Ah+. Make sure your battery is well-maintained and fully charged before relying on the mover, especially if you’re off-grid.

Most systems come with a handheld remote that controls the direction and speed of the caravan. Once the rollers are engaged, you can move the caravan with the press of a button, making small adjustments easy, even if you’re working alone.

The controls usually include forward, reverse, and rotational movement, allowing you to park with millimetre precision. It’s especially helpful on sloped or uneven ground where manual pushing would be difficult or unsafe.

Motor movers are especially valuable if you regularly need to park in tight spaces, live on a slope, or store your caravan in a confined area. They also reduce the physical effort of manoeuvring your van, which is great for solo travellers, older users, or those with limited mobility.

While the initial cost (usually £900–£1,500 fitted) can seem high, the convenience, reduced risk of damage, and stress-free setup often make it a worthwhile long-term investment.

“We arrived at Llanfyllin, and it was raining so hard it was difficult to find our plot. Once parked up, it took just 90 seconds as we let our automatic levelling system get us level. Thank you, Bristol Caravans, for fitting our amazing levelling system.”
