FAQs
Most motorhomes and campervans have a low mileage as they are used for “leisure”, therefore “time period” rather than the mileage triggers when a replacement cambelt is due. Check with your vehicle manufacture for a specfic period, for example Fiat recommend a new cambelt every 5 years.
The core element of a cambelt is rubber. Rubber goes hard over time. A worn cambelt will look shiney, frayed at the edges, small cracks will start to show.
But the big problem is that in most cases you cannot see your cambelt, as it is behind covers in the engine compartment.
The safest option is to replace the cambelt based on milesage covered or time since new or last replacement. Check your service history to see when the cambelt was last changed. If a change has not been recorded, book a new cambelt, it will be cheaper than a broken cambelt.
For motorhomes and campervans there are a few challenges, that relate to cambelt access.
On an A Class motorhome the access to the engine is generally restricted by the bodywork.
On larger campervans or motorhomes, it’s getting the vehicle into the workshop, then up in the air, these are large vehicles.
The time can vary from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the vehicle and the workshop. We recommend you visit your local mechanical motorhome workshop and ask them how they would undertake a cambelt replacement. If you are not 100% happy, give Bristol Caravans a call, we have touring pitches on site, so you can combine a workshop visit with an overnight stay and a visit into Bristol.
Great question, no not all Fiats have a cambelt!
Whatever your base vehicle Fiat, Ford, Mercedes, etc
Check your handbook. If it’s not clear, give the team here at Bristol Caravans a call.
The cambelt is more likely to break when the engine is running (driving), so this question is a real possibility, it’s probably what will happen!
Cambelt failure is very dangerous. The pistons will probably strike the valves in the cylinders, this will damage the engine, this might actually cause the engine to seize. If the engine stops, safety items like steering and brakes could fail.
This is why it is so important to have your motorhome cambelt changed as part of your maintenance routine.
