Common Motorhome Warning Lights Explained

Modern motorhomes are packed with technology designed to keep you safe and informed and warning lights are a key part of that system. While seeing a light appear on the dashboard can be unsettling, not every warning means something serious is wrong.

In this guide, we explain some of the most common motorhome warning lights, what they typically indicate and why it’s important to understand them.

Engine Management Light

Often shown as an outline of an engine, this light indicates that the engine management system has detected a fault.

It could relate to emissions, sensors, fuel delivery or airflow. In some cases, performance may feel normal but the light is still telling you something needs attention. Ignoring it can lead to reduced efficiency or further issues over time.

Oil Pressure Warning Light

This light usually appears as an oil can symbol and relates to engine oil pressure.

Low oil pressure can be caused by low oil levels, incorrect oil or internal engine issues. If this light appears while driving, it’s important to take it seriously, as continued running without proper lubrication can cause significant engine damage.

Battery or Charging System Light

This warning light indicates a problem with the vehicle’s charging system, not the leisure batteries.

It may point to issues with the alternator, drive belt, or electrical connections. If the system isn’t charging correctly, the vehicle battery can discharge, potentially leading to starting problems.

Coolant Temperature Warning Light

Often shown as a thermometer symbol, this light warns that the engine temperature is too high.

Overheating can result from low coolant levels, leaks, or cooling system faults. Continued driving with high engine temperatures can cause serious mechanical damage so it’s important to monitor this warning carefully.

Glow Plug or Pre-Heat Light (Diesel Motorhomes)

This light is common on diesel motorhomes and usually appears briefly when starting a cold engine.

If it stays on longer than normal or flashes while driving, it may indicate a fault with the glow plugs or engine management system, which can affect cold starting and smooth running.

DPF Warning Light

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) warning light relates to the emissions system.

It often appears when the vehicle has been driven mainly on short journeys, preventing the DPF from regenerating properly. A longer drive at consistent speed can sometimes help but persistent warnings should be investigated to avoid blockage.

ABS Warning Light

The ABS light indicates an issue with the anti-lock braking system.

While normal braking usually remains functional, ABS may not operate correctly in emergency situations. This can reduce control on slippery surfaces and should be checked to maintain full braking safety.

Tyre Pressure Warning Light

This light monitors tyre pressure and alerts you when one or more tyres are outside the recommended range.

Incorrect tyre pressures can affect handling, fuel consumption and tyre wear. Regular checks are especially important on motorhomes due to their weight and load sensitivity.

Airbag Warning Light

The airbag light relates to the vehicle’s supplemental restraint system.

If illuminated, airbags or seatbelt pretensioners may not function as intended in an accident. Even if the motorhome drives normally, this warning should not be ignored.

Final Thoughts

Warning lights are designed to communicate, not to panic you. Understanding what they mean helps you respond appropriately and maintain your motorhome in good working order.

Paying attention to dashboard warnings, carrying out regular checks and addressing issues early can help prevent breakdowns, protect your motorhome and ensure safer, more enjoyable journeys.
