Caravan Levelling Systems Explained

When you arrive on site, rarely is the ground perfectly flat. Traditionally, levelling a caravan involves jockey wheels, ramps, spirit levels, and a fair bit of trial and error. A levelling system removes that hassle by using hydraulic or electronic mechanisms to automatically adjust your caravan into a perfectly level position at the push of a button.

Being properly level isn’t just about comfort — it protects appliances like your fridge, improves sleep quality, prevents doors from swinging open or shut, and stabilises the whole van. For many owners, especially tourers who travel regularly, it turns a 20–30 minute setup into a quick and stress-free process.

Most modern systems use hydraulic rams or motor-driven corner steadies fitted to the chassis. Sensors detect the caravan’s angle, and with one press of a button the system adjusts each corner independently until the van is perfectly level.

Premium systems, such as those from E&P Hydraulics, are fully automatic and can level a caravan in just a couple of minutes. Once levelled, the system also stabilises the van, reducing movement when walking inside. Everything is controlled from a compact panel or remote handset, making the process simple and user-friendly.

In the majority of cases, levelling systems can be installed on existing caravans, not just new models. Compatibility depends mainly on your chassis type (such as E&P and HPC), weight, and available space underneath the van.

A professional installer will assess your caravan to ensure the correct system is fitted safely and securely. At a specialist dealership like Bristol Caravans, trained technicians can advise on suitability and ensure the installation meets manufacturer guidelines and warranty standards.

The exact installation time depends on the type of levelling system being fitted and the specific chassis and layout of your caravan. Fully automatic hydraulic systems generally require more fitting time than semi-automatic options, as components such as hydraulic rams, control units, pipework, and wiring need to be securely mounted and tested.

Having your system installed by experienced technicians ensures everything is aligned correctly, weight is distributed properly, and the system operates safely and reliably. Once fitted, you’ll receive a full demonstration so you can confidently level your caravan at the touch of a button on your next trip away.

Most hydraulic levelling systems add approximately 60–80kg to the overall weight of your caravan. This needs to be considered within your caravan’s payload allowance to ensure you remain within legal towing limits.

Before installation, a specialist will confirm that your caravan has sufficient payload capacity. If necessary, weight adjustments can be discussed to maintain safe towing compliance. Proper installation ensures that the added weight is evenly distributed across the chassis.

For occasional users, manual levelling may feel manageable. However, for regular tourers — especially those moving between sites frequently — a levelling system dramatically reduces setup time and physical effort.

Beyond convenience, the improved stability makes a noticeable difference inside the caravan, particularly at night or in windy conditions. Many owners describe it as one of the best upgrades they’ve made, alongside motor movers, because it transforms the overall touring experience into something smoother and more enjoyable.
