Eyes where your need them most

Reversing Cameras

You’ve found the perfect pitch but it’s a tight squeeze between two trees and there’s a low post you can’t quite see. No need to guess or get out and check, your reversing camera has it covered. Clear, wide-angle visibility even at night means parking becomes simple and stress-free, so you can focus on enjoying the view, not worrying about what’s behind you.

Reversing cameras explained

Not all reversing cameras are created equal, and what works for a car won’t always suit a motorhome. Think about what you need day to day, do you just want help with reversing, or do you also want a live rear view while driving?

Consider things like lens type (single or dual), image quality in low light, screen options, and whether you want a wired or wireless system. The size and layout of your motorhome also play a part, longer vehicles may benefit from dual cameras or wider viewing angles.

It’s not just about avoiding obstacles, it’s about making life easier every time you hit the road.

If you’re towing a car or trailer behind your motorhome, a standard reversing camera may only show the rear of your motorhome, not what’s behind the towed vehicle. However, there are camera systems designed specifically for towing, which can include an additional camera mounted on the trailer or rear vehicle. These can be wired or wireless and linked to your existing in-cab display.

For more flexibility, some systems let you switch between multiple camera views, so you can monitor both the rear of your motorhome and what’s behind your trailer while driving or reversing. It’s a great way to boost safety and confidence, especially in busy traffic or tight spots.

A single-lens camera activates when you reverse, showing you what’s directly behind the vehicle. A dual-lens system offers both a low, wide-angle view for reversing and a higher, more focused view for use while driving, essentially acting like a digital rear-view mirror.

Dual-lens systems are particularly popular in motorhomes where a traditional mirror view is blocked by the vehicle’s structure. They give you better all-round visibility when overtaking, changing lanes, or checking traffic behind you on the move.

Reversing camera screens come in a few styles. Some are dash-mounted displays, while others are built into the rearview mirror and only activate when reversing.

Your choice depends on your layout, budget, and how often you want the screen visible. If you drive with the camera on continuously (as many motorhome owners do), a dedicated dash or mirror screen is often the most convenient.

Wireless reversing cameras have improved dramatically in recent years, with better signal strength and image quality. They’re especially useful for longer vehicles or when running a cable is impractical. Most offer good performance at typical reversing speeds and distances.

However, some environments (like built-up areas or near other wireless devices) can cause minor interference. If you’re looking for the most stable, consistent performance- especially while driving-a wired system is still the gold standard.

Some reversing camera systems are designed for dual use, switching automatically into reverse mode when parking, but also allowing a rear-facing view to stay active while driving. This is particularly helpful in motorhomes where traditional mirrors don’t provide a usable view.

Having a live rear camera feed can make motorway driving, lane changes, and overtaking much safer. If this feature matters to you, be sure to choose a system with continuous power and a monitor designed for use while driving.

Motorhomes are large and often have limited rear visibility, making reversing and tight manoeuvres more challenging. A reversing camera gives you a clear view of what’s directly behind your vehicle, helping you avoid hidden obstacles like low walls, bollards, or pedestrians, things that mirrors often miss.

Even confident drivers appreciate the added reassurance a camera provides. Many minor accidents and insurance claims happen during low-speed reversing, and a well-installed camera system can help prevent them, making driving and parking safer and less stressful.

“We arrived at Llanfyllin, and it was raining so hard it was difficult to find our plot. Once parked up, it took just 90 seconds as we let our automatic levelling system get us level. Thank you, Bristol Caravans, for fitting our amazing levelling system.”
