EICR 230V Safety Check Explained

An EICR is a detailed inspection of your motorhome’s mains-powered electrical system, including wiring, sockets, RCD, MCBs, and connected appliances. It identifies any faults, deterioration, or potential hazards that could cause shocks, fire or appliance failure.

The test is carried out by a qualified electrician using professional tools, and the results are recorded in a formal report. This ensures that all 230V circuits in your motorhome are safe to use, whether at home, on a campsite, or connected to mains electricity abroad.

While motorhome owners are not legally obligated to have an EICR, many campsites expect one as proof that the electrical system is safe. It provides peace of mind that your vehicle meets recognised safety standards, particularly when using mains hook-ups or touring in different countries.

Even if it’s not mandatory, carrying out an EICR is a proactive safety step. It reduces the risk of electric shocks, appliance failure, or fire caused by hidden electrical faults, ensuring your motorhome is safe for you, your passengers, and your equipment.

All uk vehicle manufactures issue a 230V Installtion certificate for the 230V system. This certificate lasts 3 years. Manufcatures recommend your caravan motorhoem or campervan has a new EICR every 3 years.

An EICR should also be completed after installing new appliances, carrying out repairs, or if you notice signs of electrical problems such as a tripping RCD, flickering lights, or burning smells. Regular checks help catch small issues before they become serious hazards, keeping your motorhome safe and your insurance valid.

A habitation check covers a wide range of motorhome safety points, including gas systems, appliances, plumbing and overall structural safety. It is often required to maintain your warranty and provide a broad overview of the vehicles condition, a full habitiation service history will add value to your vehicle.

An EICR, on the other hand, is a specialised inspection that tests your mains-powered electrical circuits in detail. It identifies faults, verifies the integrity of wiring, RCD, fuses, and MCB’s (mirco service brakers and provides a formal report. Doing both ensures your motorhome is safe from both electrical and broader habitation risks.

A failed EICR indicates that one or more circuits, appliances or components are unsafe. The report will specify what the faults are, their severity and the recommended corrective actions. Serious issues, such as exposed wiring or a faulty RCD, should be repaired immediately to prevent shocks or fire.

Once repairs are carried out, a re-inspection or update to the report will be completed to confirm that the motorhome now meets safety standards. While a failure can be worrying, identifying the problem during an inspection is far safer than discovering it through a dangerous incident on the road or campsite.

The EICR assement includes a test only tests your motorhomes components such as internal wiring and appliances and the orange hookup cable.

The post and connection on the campsite are the responsibily of campsite, the campsite will be appointing their own electrician for an EICR test which is done every 5 years.

“We arrived at Llanfyllin, and it was raining so hard it was difficult to find our plot. Once parked up, it took just 90 seconds as we let our automatic levelling system get us level. Thank you, Bristol Caravans, for fitting our amazing levelling system.”
