230v PIR EICR Top Tips

The Periodic Inspection Report (PIR) is a specific set of tests completed on the 230v (mains electric) system within your leisure vehicle (caravan, motorhome, campervan), by a trained / competent person. Once completed a Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is issued, in this article we refer to this service as the PIR EICR 230v safety check.

The PIR EICR 230v safety check is standard, industry wide, and includes a series of tests / checks of the 230v mains electrical wiring, switches and appliances within your caravan, motorhome or campervan. The repeat time period for a caravan, motorhome or campervan is every three years from first registartion.

Whilst a yearly Habitation Service will visually check 230v appliances and 230v cables. During a PIR EICR 230v safety check appliances are disconnected, and 230v cables that are hidden in walls, floor and furniture are tested. The PIR tests the parts of your 230v system that are unseen, as well as integral safety items.

When was the last time you had your 230v mains electrics checked? If you purchased a “pre-loved” vehicle, which is over three years old, and you do not have a record of a PIR EICR 230v safety check  it is time for the test.

When your caravan, motorhome or campervan was sold new, the manufacturer (as long as they were NCC approved) would have supplied a certificate similar to the EICR, called an “installation report”, which is valid for the first three years.

The PIR EICR 230v safety check is not a legal requirement, but is recommended every 3 years (minimum), and is additional (above and beyond) to the work completed in your annual service

As an AWS approved workshop we offer the PIR 230v safety check with EICR certificate.

PIR EICR 230v safety check is an inspection on the condition of an existing electrical installation, to identify faults and non compliance with the national safety standard for electrical installations. The main purpose of a PIR EICR 230v safety check is to report on the safe condition of an existing installation.

A PIR EICR 230v safety check will:

  • reveal if any of your electrical circuits or equipment is overloaded
  • find any potential electric shock risks and fire hazards in your electrical installation
  • identify any defective DIY electrical work
  • highlight any lack of earthing or bonding

In your vehicle, near your 230v consumer unit, there should be a sticker, recommending the PIR EICR 230v safety check is completed.

The PIR EICR 230v safety check is recommended by leisure vehicle manufacturers via the Approved Workshop Scheme (AWS), which is operated by, The National Caravan Council (NCC), Camping and Caravaning Club (CCC) and the Caravan Club (CC).

Approved Workshop Scheme and Periodic Inspections.

As part of AWS (Approved Workshop Scheme), we must inform you about PIR EICR 230v safety check (and the safety implications of not having a current PIR certificate). We are obliged to ask customers if they would like a PIR EICR 230v safety check, and to record a customers signature if PIR is declined. This is what AWS say about PIR & EICR.
